ROCK STORIES – David Bowie, “Heroes” e la chitarra di Robert Fripp

“Heroes” fa parte della cosiddetta trilogia di Berlino, che David Bowie realizzò alla fine degli anni settanta, composta da Low (1977), “Heroes” (1977) e Lodger (1979). Questi tre dischi furono incisi da Bowie in seguito al suo trasferimento a Berlino ovest alla fine del 1976, frutto della collaborazione con il produttore statunitense Tony Visconti e il musicista inglese Brian Eno. In realtà Heroes fu l’unico album veramente prodotto nella capitale tedesca, mentre Low e Lodger furono registrati tra Svizzera e Parigi.

Un romantico, ma distrutto dal dolore, prega la sua ragazza di non abbandonarlo, un “Eroe” virgolettato per sottolinearne la fragilità. Brano ispirato a due immaginari amanti che si presumeva Bowie avesse visto abbracciarsi guardando fuori dalla finestra degli Hansa Studios, in realtà parole ispirate alla relazione clandestina di Tony Visconti con la corista Antonia Maaß, mentre il produttore era sposato con Mary Hopkin.

Ma se si sa praticamente tutto della canzone, magari non tutti saranno a conoscenza della chitarra di Robert Fripp che suona nel brano, Tony Visconti racconta che: “Robert Fripp arrivò agli Hansa Studios solo con la sua chitarra, senza nessun amplificatore; questo ci costrinse a registrare direttamente in regia alzando al massimo il volume del monitor per garantire a Fripp il necessario feedback, come si sente all’inizio della canzone. In pratica rischiammo di diventare sordi! Anche se molti pensano che il suono fosse stato ottenuto tramite un E-Bow, si tratta solo di un feedback controllato. Mettemmo assieme tre take sovrapposti, Robert registrò la parte di chitarra per tre volte consecutivamente, senza mai riascoltare la precedente. Quando abbiamo mandato in play tutte e tre le tracce insieme l’effetto prodotto fu incredibile”.
