REMEDY – Intervista al chitarrista e fondatore Roland Forsman

Parlare nuovamente con Roland Forsman è un vero piacere, ne ho avuto nuovamente l’opportunità per l’uscita del secondo album dei Remedy,”Pleasure Beeats The Pain” (leggi qui la recensione), un album veramente eccellente. Di seguito l’intervista.

Ciao e bentornato su Tuttorock. Nuovo album, qual è stato il processo compositivo?
Grazie, Fabio! Sì, abbiamo un nuovo album! Il processo compositivo è rimasto sostanzialmente lo stesso, scrivendo la musica come faccio di solito. Alcuni brani sono stati scritti in collaborazione con miei cari amici, mentre altri li ho realizzati da solo. È meraviglioso avere un team di supporto e di talento intorno a te quando crei musica.

Hai cambiato metodo rispetto all’album precedente?
Non in modo significativo. Tuttavia, ho consapevolmente incorporato chitarre più pesanti, a volte quasi virando verso il metal. Ciò aggiunge peso alle melodie, che spesso sono in netto contrasto con i toni scuri e pesanti della chitarra. Anche questa volta siamo stati più audaci, rendendo l’album più dinamico del nostro debutto. Il mio obiettivo era che questo album avesse “una canzone per tutti”.

Facciamo un passo indietro al 2022, anno in cui è uscito il debutto “Something That Your Eyes Won’t See”. Ti aspettavi reazioni così positive sia dai fan che dai critici musicali?
No, per niente. È stata una sorpresa completa! Abbiamo esaurito il nostro disco, siamo arrivati ​​in cima alle classifiche e ci siamo imbarcati in un enorme tour estivo, tutto nei primi sei mesi come band. È stato strabiliante!

Ora “Pleasure Beats The Pain”, ti aspetti lo stesso successo? Parlami del significato del titolo e dei testi; riflettono la vita difficile di oggi?
Sì, il titolo si collega direttamente alle sfide della vita. La teoria di Sigmund Freud suggerisce che ogni decisione umana si basa su due fattori: piacere e dolore. Se il piacere supera il dolore, scegliamo quella strada. Riceverai ulteriori approfondimenti nelle prossime settimane, quindi resta sintonizzato sui nostri social media e sulla tua piattaforma di streaming preferita.

Sei sempre tu l’autore della musica e dei testi oppure contribuisce anche il resto della band?
Principalmente scrivo i testi, ma collaboro con alcuni amici talentuosi su alcune canzoni. Lo stesso vale per la musica, e i contributi dei miei coautori sembrano sempre elevare ogni traccia a un nuovo livello. Anche i membri della band svolgono un ruolo cruciale in studio, spesso portando le canzoni in un’altra dimensione con le loro abilità.

Il sound è molto anni ’80. È questo ciò che i Remedy vogliono? Riportare indietro nel tempo, perché?
Sì e no. Sebbene le nostre fondamenta siano radicate nel suono degli anni ’80, sono ansioso di evolvermi come band e come cantautore. Abbiamo stabilito la nostra identità musicale, ma il nostro viaggio è appena iniziato e continueremo a progredire.

Anche questa volta, Eric Martensson degli Eclipse ha mixato e masterizzato. Si tratta di una partnership forte adesso?
Lo spero sicuramente! Hahaha. Il tocco magico di Erik è indispensabile; non saremmo gli stessi senza di lui.

Quali sono per te le differenze tra i due album?
Questo secondo album è più personale e dinamico. Mi sentivo più fiducioso come cantautore e produttore, il che si riflette nella varietà delle canzoni rispetto al nostro debutto.

Melodie e arrangiamenti sempre molto raffinati. Quanto è importante per te tutto questo?
È fondamentale. Anche quando la maggior parte delle persone è soddisfatta di una canzone o di una produzione, mi sforzo di migliorarla, sia scrivendo testi migliori che creando linee di chitarra più interessanti. C’è tanto duro lavoro dietro questo album e sono felice che lo si veda. Quando penso che una canzone sia pronta, passo almeno un’altra settimana a perfezionarla. È faticoso ma ne vale la pena! Hahaha.

Riff graffianti, ritornelli orecchiabili e melodici, ma questa volta c’è anche un sound più metal in “Crying Heart” e “Sin For Me”. Ci sarà più spazio per un sound più metal nel futuro dei Remedy?
Sì, lo credo. Il mio obiettivo è bilanciare il buio e la luce, la notte e il giorno, il piacere e il dolore. Se le mie melodie e talvolta i testi rappresentano la luce, allora le chitarre portano l’oscurità. È tutta una questione di equilibrio, sia nella vita che nella musica.

Ancora una volta dai importanza ai video musicali. Sono davvero importanti oggi? Puoi dirci qualcosa sulla loro creazione e sul loro significato?
Non so se i video siano importanti, e non mi interessa! Hahaha. Abbiamo sempre sognato di fare video, essendo cresciuti guardando MTV. E ora abbiamo un motivo per farlo! Che abbiano un impatto o meno, la loro produzione costa sicuramente molto. Hahaha Ma è un sogno che amiamo perseguire.

Avete fatto un tour in cui c’era anche Kee Marcello. Quali sono state le tue sensazioni ed emozioni e come lo hai coinvolto?
Sì, siamo stati in tour insieme questa primavera! È stato stupefacente. Sono cresciuto ascoltando Kee e il suo modo di suonare la chitarra melodica, quindi il fatto che avesse i Remedy come atto di apertura è stato fantastico e ne siamo stati onorati. È stato fantastico!

Nuovo tour in preparazione? Ci sarà una data anche in Italia?
Attualmente siamo in tournée in Svezia ma non vediamo l’ora di fare un tour in Italia! Abbiamo ricevuto così tanto amore e ottimi feedback dai nostri fan lì. Grazie a tutti!

Hello and welcome back to Tuttorock. New album, what was the compositional process?
Thank you, Fabio! Yes, we have a new album! The compositional process remained largely the same, with me writing the music as I usually do. Some tracks were co-written with good friends of mine, while a few I crafted on my own. It’s wonderful to have a supportive, and talented team around you when creating music.

Have you changed your method compared to the previous album?
Not significantly. However, I’ve consciously incorporated heavier guitars, almost veering into metal at times. This adds weight to the melodies, which are often quite contrasting to the dark, heavy guitar tones. We’ve also been bolder this time, making the album more dynamic than our debut. I aimed for this album to have “a song for everyone.”

Let’s take a step back to 2022, the year in which your debut “Something That Your Eyes Won’t See” was released. Did you expect such positive reactions from both fans and music critics?
No, not at all. It was a complete surprise! We sold out our record, hit the top charts, and embarked on a massive summer tour—all within our first six months as a band. It was mind-blowing!

Now “Pleasure Beats The Pain,” do you expect the same acclaim? Tell me about the meaning of the title and the lyrics; do they reflect today’s difficult life?
Yes, the title directly connects to life’s challenges. Sigmund Freud’s theory suggests that every human decision is based on two factors: pleasure and pain. If the pleasure outweighs the pain, we choose that path. You’ll get more insights in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to our social media and your favorite streaming platform.

Are you always the author of the music and lyrics, or does the rest of the band also contribute?
I primarily write the lyrics, but I do collaborate with some talented friends on certain songs. The same goes for the music, and my co-writers contributions always seem to elevate each track to a new level. The band members also play a crucial role in the studio, often taking the songs to another dimension with their skills.

The sound is very 80s. Is this what Remedy wants to bring back, and why?
Yes and no. While our foundation is rooted in the 80s sound, I’m eager to evolve as a band and as a songwriter. We’ve established our musical identity, but our journey has just begun, and we will continue to progress.

This time, Eric Martensson from Eclipse is mixing and mastering. Is this a strong partnership now?
I certainly hope so! Hahaha. Erik’s magic touch is indispensable; we wouldn’t sound the same without him.

What are the differences between the two albums for you?
This second album is more personal and dynamic. I felt more confident as a songwriter and producer, which is reflected in the varied songs compared to our debut.

Always very refined melodies and arrangements. How important is all this for you?
It’s crucial. Even when most people are satisfied with a song or production, I push myself to make it better, whether it’s through writing better lyrics or creating cooler guitar lines. There’s a lot of hard work behind this album, and I’m glad it shows. When I think a song is ready, I still spend at least another week refining it. It’s exhausting but worth it! Hahaha.

Scratching riffs, catchy and melodic choruses, yet this time there is also a more metal sound in “Crying Heart” and “Sin For Me.” Will there be more room for a metal sound in Remedy’s future?
Yes, I believe so. I aim to balance dark and light, night and day, pleasure and pain. If my melodies and sometimes lyrics represent the light, then the guitars bring the darkness. It’s all about balance, both in life and in music.

Once again, you give importance to music videos. Are they really important today? Can you tell us something about their creation and meaning?
I don’t know if videos are important, and I don’t care! Hahaha.  We’ve always dreamed of making videos, having grown up watching MTV. And now we have a reason to do so! Whether they have an impact or not, they certainly cost a lot to produce. Hahaha But it’s a dream we love pursuing.

You did a tour where Kee Marcello was also there. What were your sensations and emotions, and how did you involve him?
Yes, we toured together this spring! It was amazing. I grew up listening to Kee and his melodic guitar playing, so him having Remedy as an opening act was fantastic and we were honored. It was a blast!

New tour in preparation? Will there be a date in Italy too?
We’re currently touring in Sweden but can’t wait to tour Italy! We’ve received so much love and  great feedback from our fans there. Thank you all!
