WRITTEN BY WOLVES – Intervista sulla loro prima data italiana

In occasione della data Giovedì 2 novembre 2023 – Legend Club – Milano la band Written by Wolves.

Ciao e piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock. La Nuova Zelanda è famosa, ma lontanissima dall’Europa, come nasce un gruppo rock in quella parte del mondo?
La scena musicale è piuttosto sorprendente in questo momento, il lato positivo dello streaming è che possiamo essere dall’altra parte del mondo, in Nuova Zelanda, e grazie alla potenza di piattaforme come Spotify e Youtube possiamo connetterci con i fan in tutto il mondo. Penso però che dimostri il potere della musica e come questa possa essere un linguaggio universale. Siamo così incredibilmente entusiasti di arrivare in Italia e di incontrare di persona i nostri fan italiani! 

Quali sono stati i vostri primi ascolti musicali?
Alcuni dei miei primi ricordi musicali riguardano i miei genitori che mi facevano ascoltare le canzoni dei Beatles, Elvis e Johnny Cash. Lunghi viaggi cantando le canzoni di Elvis a squarciagola con mio padre o mia madre che mi portavano a innumerevoli lezioni di canto, prove della band e spettacoli. Devo moltissimo della mia carriera a genitori incredibilmente solidali: mia mamma e mio fratello verranno di persona allo show di Milano! 

Quale è la scena musicale neozelandese al momento?
La scena musicale neozelandese è davvero forte in questo momento, abbiamo gli stessi problemi con i locali di musica dal vivo che faticano a rimanere aperti, ma ci sono alcune incredibili band rock neozelandesi là fuori al momento. Se stai cercando alcune band neozelandesi epiche in questo momento, prova Coridian, Banks Arcade, Crooked Royals, Ekko Park, Devilskin, Shepherds Reign… la lista potrebbe continuare, la scena musicale quaggiù sta generando musicisti incredibili! 

Avete debuttato con “Secrets” proprio poco prima della pandemia, non una scelta molto fortunata… come avete vissuto la vicenda?
Sì, non è stato un ottimo tempismo dal nostro punto di vista, anche se suppongo che non ci sia un buon momento per una pandemia globale… Il nostro piano era di pubblicare Secrets nel 2019 e fare un tour in Europa nel 2020 – quindi siamo in ritardo di soli 3 anni su quello… La pandemia è stata dura quaggiù, come lo è stata per tutti, ma è da questo che è nato The Collab Project! 

Come è arrivato il vostro interesse e la decisione di partecipare a “The Collab Project”, questo progetto per la salute mentale?
Come accennato in precedenza The Collab Project è nato durante la pandemia. Da quando sono nati i Written By Wolves abbiamo sempre ricevuto messaggi dai fan su cosa significa per loro la nostra musica e sull’impatto che ha avuto sulle loro vite. Durante la pandemia abbiamo davvero visto quante persone soffrivano e volevano fare di più: Secrets era essenzialmente un concept album in cui si parlava di cose di cui, di solito, non ci sentiamo a nostro agio a parlarne. Con The Collab Project volevamo andare oltre e mostrare davvero ai nostri fan e follower che, qualunque cosa stiano attraversando, non sono soli. Sono ancora stupito dal supporto che abbiamo avuto, abbiamo inviato messaggi a numerose persone spiegando cosa stavamo facendo e non dimenticherò mai e poi mai i momenti in cui abbiamo ricevuto risposte da artisti del calibro di Sonny Sandoval dei P.O.D e Kellin Quinn. Mi lascia ancora a bocca aperta quello che è successo. Il Collab Project farà sempre parte di Written By Wolves, ci saranno diverse iterazioni ma il messaggio sarà sempre lo stesso. 

Avete già condiviso il palco con alcune fra le più grandi band mondiali, quale aneddoto o ricordo particolare potete raccontarci?
Ce ne sono stati alcuni divertenti, ne ho avuto uno piuttosto imbarazzante con Ronnie Radke, è venuto a parlare con noi dopo il nostro set quando abbiamo aperto per i Falling In Reverse. Mi sono avvicinato per stringergli la mano, ma lui ha subito allungato la mano per stringerla di nuovo. Non avevo visto nessuno della band seguirmi, quindi ho pensato che fosse un tipo da doppia scossa. Ho obbedito e gli ho stretto di nuovo la mano, ma ho scoperto che Karl, il nostro batterista, era dietro di me pronto a stringermi la mano… Ronnie mi ha guardato come se fossi il ragazzo più strano del mondo… Anche Machine Gun Kelly era piuttosto pazzo, abbiamo suonato a un festival con lui e quando è sceso dal palco non si è letteralmente tolto la chitarra dalla schiena per circa 3 ore, ha fatto tutto con quella addosso – è anche andato in bagno con quella addosso… Fantastico ragazzo però, con così tanta energia… 

Il vostro sound mi piace tantissimo, potente e fresco, come nascono le vostre canzoni, a cosa vi ispirate?
La salute mentale è ovviamente un grande obiettivo per la band, la musica è sempre stata la mia terapia ed è il mio sfogo per togliermi dallo stomaco le cose di cui faccio fatica a parlare. Tuttavia, siamo davvero determinati a spingerci oltre, vogliamo fare cose che non abbiamo mai fatto prima e il nostro motto in studio è sempre stato: se non ci mette a disagio, probabilmente non è ancora pronto del tutto… 

Ora siete in tour e vi aspettiamo in Italia, cosa rappresenta la dimensione live per voi? Cosa promettete ai fan italiani?
Abbiamo sempre visto il nostro spettacolo dal vivo come la nostra più grande risorsa. È ciò che amiamo e ciò che sappiamo fare meglio. È una connessione completamente diversa con i fan quando siamo sul palco. Promettiamo di portare quantità folli di energia e di offrire a ogni membro del pubblico un’esperienza incredibile che non dimenticheranno. Potremo fare una vasta carrellata del nostro intero catalogo e ci sarà di sicuro un pezzo per ognuno dei presenti… 

Progetti futuri?
Se sei un fan della band, allora questo è un momento molto emozionante, abbiamo così tante novità in arrivo e così tante nuove uscite entusiasmanti proprio dietro l’angolo, quindi ricordati di seguirci. Guardando al futuro, puntiamo a tornare in Europa l’anno prossimo, dopo aver rotto il ghiaccio questa volta!

Hello and nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. New Zealand is famous, but very far from Europe, how is a rock band born in that part of the world?
The music scene is pretty amazing right now, the upside of streaming is that we can be down the bottom of the world in New Zealand yet through the power of platforms like Spotify and Youtube still connect with fans all over the world. I think it shows the power of music though, and how it is a universal language. We are so incredibly excited to get to Italy and connect with our italian fans in person! 

What were your first musical listens?
Some of my first musical memories are of my parents playing me songs by The Beatles, Elvis and Johnny Cash. Long road trips singing Elvis songs at the top of my lungs with my Dad or my Mum taking me to countless singing lessons, band practises and shows. I owe so much of my career to incredibly supportive parents – my Mum and brother are actually coming to the show in Milan! 

What is the New Zealand music scene like at the moment?
The New Zealand music scene is really strong right now, we have the same issues with live music venues struggling to remain open but there are some incredible New Zealand rock bands out there at the moment. If you are looking for some epic New Zealand bands right now try Coridian, Banks Arcade, Crooked Royals, Ekko Park, Devilskin, Shepherds Reign… the list goes on, the music scene down here is breeding some incredible musicians! 

You debuted with “Secrets” just before the pandemic, not a very lucky choice… how did you experience the story?
Yea that wasn’t great timing from our perspective, although I suppose there is no good time for a global pandemic… Our plan had been to release Secrets in 2019 and tour Europe in 2020 – so we are only 3 years late on that one… The pandemic was tough down here, as it was on everyone but it was out of this that The Collab Project was born! 

How did your interest and decision to participate in “The Collab Project”, this mental health project, come about?
As mentioned above The Collab Project was born during the pandemic. Since Written By Wolves began we have always recieved messages from fans about what our music means to them and the impact it has had on their lives. During the pandemic we really saw how much people were hurting and wanted to do more – Secrets was essentially a concept album about talking about things we aren’t usually comfortable talking about. With The Collab Project we wanted to take that further and really show our fans and followers that no matter what they are going through they are not alone. I’m still blown away by the support we had, we sent messages to numerous people explaining what we were doing and I will never, ever forget the moments when we got replies back from the likes of Sonny Sandoval from P.O.D and Kellin Quinn. It still blows my mind that happened. The Collab Project will always be a part of Written By Wolves, there will be different iterations but the message will always be the same. 

You have already shared the stage with some of the biggest bands in the world, what particular anecdote or memory can you tell us?
There’s been a few funny ones, I had a pretty embarassing one with Ronnie Radke, he came to talk with us after our set when we opened for Falling In Reverse. I went up to shake his hand but straight away he put his hand out to shake again. I hadn’t seen any of the band follow me so figured he was a double shake kind of guy. I obliged and shook his hand again, but it turned out Karl our drummer was standing behind me ready for a hand shake as well… Ronnie looked at me like I was the weirdest dude alive… Machine Gun Kelly was also pretty crazy, we played a festival with him and when he came off stage he literally didn’t take his guitar off his back for like 3 hours, did everything with it on – even went to the bathroom with it on… Epic dude though, so much energy… 

I really like your sound, powerful and fresh, how do your songs come about, what inspires you?
Mental Health is obviously a big focus for the band, music has always been my therapy and is my outlet to get things off my chest that I struggle to talk about. However, we are really driven by pushing ourselves, we want to do things that we’ve never done before and our motto in the studio has always been if it doesn’t make us uncomfortable then it’s probably not quite there yet… 

Now you are on tour and we are waiting for you in Italy, what does the live dimension represent for you? What do you promise to Italian fan?
We have always seen our live show as our biggest asset. It is what we love and what we do best. It’s a whole different connection with the fan when we are on stage. We promise to bring insane amounts of energy and to give every audience member and incredible experience that they will not forget. We will may a real cross section of our entire catalogue and will even be sure to get a new song in for every one… 

Future projects?
If you are a fan of the band then now is a very exciting time, we have so much coming up and so many excting new releases just around the corner so be sure to keep an eye out for that. Looking forward we are aiming to make it back to Europe next year after we break the ice this time round!
