REMEDY – Intervista al chitarrista Roland Forsman

Una nuova band proveniente dalla Svezia e nata in piena pandemia. Si chiamano Remedy ed hanno pubblicato un ottimo album ““Something That Your Eyes Won’t See” (leggi qui la recensione). La parola al chitarrista Roland Forsman che ci presenta la band, di seguito l’intervista.

Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock. La prima domanda riguarda la vostra storia, una nuova band, come è nata? Vi siete formati nel bel mezzo della pandemia!
Grazie mille Fabio per questa opportunità di contribuire a Tuttorock con un’intervista! Sì hai ragione. Per farla breve, ho praticamente perso tutti i miei lavori durante la pandemia e per questo motivo ho creato questa band. Allora lavoravo principalmente come chitarrista freelance, come “mercenario”, per diversi gruppi e artisti qui in Scandinavia. Ma a causa delle restrizioni ho perso tutti i miei tour da una settimana all’altra. È stato un momento davvero terribile per me. Ma… dopo un po’ ho iniziato a scrivere canzoni. All’inizio erano principalmente per gli altri, ma dopo un po’ ho tenuto alcune canzoni per me. E quella fu l’accensione per I REMEDY. Più tardi ho presentato le canzoni per un’etichetta, la S-Rock Music, e ho ottenuto subito un contratto dopo aver suonato loro il demo di “Living On The Edge”. E ora, qualche anno dopo, eccoci qui!

Tutti voi avete avuto esperienze con altre realtà musicali svedesi, raccontami le vostre esperienze e se queste esperienze hanno contribuito alle canzoni dell’album dei Remedy.
Ogni canzone che ascolti, ogni persona che incontri ha un impatto su di te. Chi più, chi meno. Quindi tutta la mia vita è stata un percorso che mi ha portato qui. Quindi ogni canzone, ogni momento e ogni incontro ha avuto un significato per me, sono in queste canzoni. Quindi sì, tutte le mie esperienze sono qui e contribuiscono alla nostra musica.

Perché Remedy? Qual è il significato del nome e perché lo hai scelto?
Bene, Remedy significa trattamento… e questo è stato davvero il mio rimedio in un periodo difficile durante la pandemia. Inoltre, il nome di mio figlio è Remmie. Quindi è stata una scelta facile chiamare la band REMEDY.

Parlami ora dell’album, qual è stato il processo compositivo?
Io e il mio amico Sören Kronqvist, che è un cantautore fantastico, abbiamo scritto la maggior parte delle canzoni. Abbiamo sempre una buona atmosfera quando scriviamo. Sören è un po’ più aggiornato di me su quello che succede nella scena rock. Io non così tanto. Quindi insieme creiamo una grande squadra, credo, con il mio background nella musica pop e con la sua conoscenza aggiornata della scena rock/metal. Ma alcune canzoni le ho scritte io stesso, quindi il processo è abbastanza diverso. Mi piace scrivere con gli altri più che scrivere di me stesso, ma sono anche un “agente”, quindi mi assicurerò di avere un album entro la scadenza. E se questo significa scrivere qualche canzone mia, allora così sia.

Vi siete incontrati in uno studio di registrazione o a distanza?
Questo album è stato registrato quando le restrizioni erano peggiori qui in Svezia. Non siamo riusciti a registrarlo insieme. Io e Sören prima abbiamo fatto un demo, bello, poi ci abbiamo registrato la vera batteria. Successivamente abbiamo registrato il basso e le chitarre. Dopodiché voce, tastiere e così via. Fondamentalmente abbiamo ricostruito ogni canzone. Passo dopo passo come sopra.

Mi incuriosisce molto il titolo dell’album “Something That Your Eyes Won’t See”, cosa non vedono o non vogliono vedere i nostri occhi?
Se ascolti attentamente l’album la risposta è lì. Nascosto in una canzone. In realtà abbiamo preso l’idea da Bryan Adams. Per dare un nome all’album da una frase in una canzone.

Ma non vedono o non vogliono vedere?
A volte non vogliamo vedere ciò che è proprio di fronte a noi.

A questo punto ti chiedo il significato dei testi. Di cosa trattano?
Naturalmente variano molto. Ma proviamo a scrivere testi con un significato più profondo. Ma se prendiamo “Living On The Edge” per esempio, sono testi di puro rock’n’roll classico. Ma ancora una volta, “Sundays At Nine” è una canzone sull’ultimo addio di un padre alla sua famiglia. Questo era davvero qualcosa in cui Rob, il nostro cantante, poteva identificarsi poiché stava combattendo contro il cancro quando abbiamo fondato i REMEDY. Ricordo che pianse la prima volta che lesse il testo. Il testo di quella particolare canzone è stato scritto dal mio amico Pelle Arhio, che è un paroliere straordinario.

Le tue influenze musicali?
Essendo cresciuto negli anni Ottanta in Finlandia, gruppi scandinavi come Europe e Yngwie Malmsteen hanno sicuramente avuto un impatto enorme. Ma mi piacciono molto Survivor, Foreigner, Rainbow e così via… Quindi mi piace credere che i REMEDY sia un grande mashup di tutte quelle grandi icone.

Progetti futuri?
Prossimo album in arrivo! Tornerò subito in studio dopo questa intervista.

Qualche data live in preparazione? Siamo appena usciti da un grande tour estivo con i TAKIDA qui in Svezia, in qualità di supporto. È stato fantastico! Praticamente abbiamo suonato in tutti i grandi locali qui in Svezia, ed è stata una prima estate davvero fantastica per noi! Attualmente siamo principalmente in studio, lavorando su nuovo materiale… Ma abbiamo alcune date in arrivo in Svezia, potete vederle sui nostri siti di social media. Ma non vediamo davvero l’ora di venire nel sud Europa per farvi visita, ragazzi, e questo è il prossimo obiettivo che abbiamo in mente. Un tour tutto nostro!

Cosa vuoi trasmettere all’ascoltatore in un mondo che sembra impazzito? Beh, sembra che stiamo distruggendo il nostro mondo e noi stessi, quindi perché non ascoltare qualcosa dei REMEDY mentre andiamo giù? No, scherzi a parte, spero davvero che il genere umano si rimetta in ordine. Stanno accadendo un sacco di cose crudeli e folli in tutto il mondo e provo una grande vergogna per molte cose che stanno accadendo mentre parliamo. Voglio dire… perché non possiamo semplicemente essere gentili l’uno con l’altro, mangiare del cibo insieme, bere del vino e ascoltare dell’ottima musica rock allo stesso tempo?

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. The first question concerns your history, a new band, how was it born? You formed in the middle of the pandemic!
Thank you very much Fabio for this opportunity to contribute to Tuttorock with an interview! Yes, you´re right. Long story short is that I basically lost all my  jobs during the pandemic and created this band due to that. I was then mainly working as a freelance guitarist, as a “hired gun”, for different acts and artists here in Scandinavia. But due to the restrictions I lost all my tours from one week to another. It was a truly terrible time for me. But… after a while I got going with some songwriting. First it was mainly for others, but after a while I kept a few of the songs for myself. And that was the ignition for REMEDY. I later on presented the songs for a label, S- Rock Music, and got a deal straight away after playing the demo for “Living on the edge” for them.  And now, a few years later, here we are!

You have all had experiences with other Swedish musical realities, tell me about your experiences and if these experiences contributed to the songs on the Remedy album.
Every song you hear, every person you meet has an impact on you. Some more, some less. So my entire life has been a path that led me here. So every song, every moment,  and every meeting that was of meaning to me, are in these songs.  So yes, all my experiences are here and do contribute to our music.

Why Remedy? What is the meaning of the name and why did you choose it?
Well, remedy means treatment… and this truly was my remedy in a difficult period of time during the pandemic. And also, my son’s name is Remmie. So it was an easy choice naming the band REMEDY.

Tell me now about the album, what was the compositional process?
Me and my friend Sören Kronqvist, who’s a fantastic songwriter, wrote most of the songs. We always have a good vibe when writing. Sören is a little bit more updated than me about what’s  going on in the rock scene. Me not that much.  So together we build a great team I think, with my background in pop music, and with his updated knowledge about the rock/ metal scene. But a few songs I wrote myself, then the process is quite different.  I like writing with others more than writing myself, but I’m also a “doer” so I will make sure we have an album by deadline. And if that means writing a few songs  of my own, then so be it.

Did you meet in a recording studio or remotely?
This album was recorded when the restrictions were at their worst here in Sweden. We were not able to record it together. Me and Sören first made a demo, a good one, then we recorded real drums to it. After that, we recorded bass and guitars. After that vocals, keys and so on. We basically re-built every song. Step by step as above.

I am very curious about the title of the album “Something That Your Eyes Won’t See”, what don’t our eyes see?
If you listen carefully to the album the answer is there. Hidden in a song. We actually took that  idea from Bryan Adams. To name the album from a phrase in a song.

But they don’t see or don’t want to see?
Sometimes we don’t want to see what is right in front of us.

At this point I ask you the meaning of the lyrics. What are they about?
It varies a lot of course. But we try to write lyrics with a deeper meaning to it. But if we take “Living on the Edge” for example, it’s pure classic rock’n’roll lyrics. But then again, “Sundays at nine” is a song about a fathers last goodbye to his family. This was truly something Rob, our singer, could relate to as he was having a fight against cancer when we started REMEDY. I remember he cried the first time he read the lyrics. The lyrics in that particular song were written by my friend Pelle Arhio, who is a amazing lyricist.

Your musical influences?
As I grew up in the eighties in Finland, Scandinavian bands such as Europe and Yngwie Malmsteen certainly had a huge impact.  But I really like Survivor, Foreigner, Rainbow and  so on…  So I like to believe REMEDY is a big mashup from all those great icons.

Future projects?
Next album on the way! I’m going straight back to the studio after this interview.

Any live dates in preparation?
We just came off a huge summer tour with tAKIDA here in Sweden, acting as their support. Which was fantastic! We basically played on all the big venues here in Sweden, and it was a truly amazing first summer for us! Currently we’re  mainly in the studio, working on new material… But we have a few dates coming up in Sweden, you can see them on our social media sites. But we really can’t wait to get down in southern Europe to visit you guys, and that’s the next goal we have in mind. A tour of our own!

What do you want to convey to the listener in a world that seems to have gone mad?
Well, it seems like we’re destroying our world and each other, so why not listen to some REMEDY on the way down? No, jokes apart, I really hope the human race gets itself in order. There is a lot of cruel and  crazy stuff happening all over the globe, and I feel a great  disgrace about many things that are happening as we speak. I mean… Why can’t we just be nice to each other, eat some food together and drink some wine and listen to great rock music at the same time?

I wish I had an answer but unfortunately I don’t have one!! Close the interview as you want, a message to the Italian public to listen to your album.
