MIST OF MISERY – Intervista al bassista Tenebris
In occasione dell’uscita dell’album “Severance”, su etichetta Non Serviam Records, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Tenebris, bassista della band black metal svedese MIST OF MISERY, fondata nel 2010 nella periferia nord di Stoccolma con l’intento di creare musica basata su malinconia, oscurità, depressione e atmosfera.
Ciao, benvenuto su Tuttorock, parlami di “Severance”, questo fantastico nuovo album, perché avete deciso di fare un concept album e come mai avete deciso di parlare di questa storia ambientata nell’Inghilterra rurale del XIX secolo?
Avevamo iniziato a pensare di realizzare un concept album fin già dai tempi dell’ultimo album e alla fine abbiamo deciso che era giunto il momento di provare a fare proprio questo. Dato che si trattava di qualcosa che non avevamo mai fatto prima, è stata una vera sfida legare la storia e adattare tutto ad ogni singola canzone. Eravamo tutti d’accordo sul fatto che la storia che avevamo inventato dovesse svolgersi nel 19° secolo e abbiamo pensato che fosse giusto che si svolgesse nell’Inghilterra rurale.
Devo congratularmi con te perché, ascoltando l’album, sembra davvero di fare un salto indietro nel tempo, hai avuto la stessa sensazione registrando e poi ascoltando l’album?
Assolutamente sì. È ciò che abbiamo deciso di fare fin dall’inizio e ciò su cui ci siamo concentrati durante l’intero processo di scrittura. Volevamo che anche i testi riflettessero questo e penso che ci siamo riusciti.
Quanto tempo avete impiegato per completare le canzoni?
Direi che l’intero processo sia durato circa due anni in totale, senza contare la registrazione dell’album.
Avete iniziato prima con i testi o con la parte musicale?
Mortuz Denatus e io abbiamo scritto tutta la musica per prima cosa. Solo quando tutta la musica è stata scritta e orchestrata ho iniziato a scrivere i testi. A quel punto avevamo tracciato la maggior parte dei dettagli della storia. Dopo aver pubblicato “Unalterable”, i Mist of Misery erano formati da tre membri e tutti e tre ci siamo seduti per inventare la storia che è diventata “Severance”. Si trattava solo di scrivere le parole effettive, il che, ti dirò, è stata una vera sfida.
Quali riscontri state ricevendo?
Il feedback è stato assolutamente sorprendente. Alcune riviste hanno persino nominato ”Severance” uno dei migliori album dell’anno. Certo, sapevamo di aver realizzato un album piuttosto straordinario poiché noi stessi l’avevamo ascoltato centinaia di volte in tutte le sue forme, dall’inizio alla fine, prima ancora che fosse pubblicato, ma è bello vedere che altri si trovino d’accordo con noi su questo.
Avete firmato con la prestigiosa etichetta “Non Serviam Records”, siete soddisfatti di questa scelta?
Sì, sicuramente. Ricardo della Non Serviam Records è molto appassionato della musica che pubblica la sua etichetta ed è un uomo che lavora in maniera soda e dedicata. Siamo più che soddisfatti della promozione dell’album che Non Serviam Records ha fatto.
Chi ha realizzato l’artwork?
L’artwork per l’album, così come per quello precedente, è stato realizzato da una nostra amica, Alice Ruitenberg, conosciuta anche come Sulphuris.
La band è composta da 3 elementi, avete intenzione di aggiungere altri membri in futuro?
Abbiamo reclutato un nuovo cantante per questo album, Änglamakaren, che è anche il cantante dei Night Crowned. Ha deciso dopo la registrazione delle parti vocali di diventare un membro permanente dei Mist of Misery, quindi attualmente siamo composti da quattro membri. Abbiamo in programma di reclutare un altro chitarrista nel prossimo futuro.
Anche il prossimo sarà un concept album?
Il nostro piano è continuare su questa strada poiché pensiamo che si adatti perfettamente alla nostra musica, quindi è quello per cui ci impegneremo. Ovviamente non ci possono essere garanzie, ma è ciò a cui miriamo.
State organizzando un tour? Verrete anche in Italia?
Purtroppo non ci sono tour in programma ma ci piacerebbe molto suonare dal vivo il più possibile in Italia così come nel resto d’Europa. Speriamo che si presenti qualche opportunità nel prossimo futuro e che più persone aprano gli occhi sui Mist of Misery. Abbiamo pubblicato parecchie buone uscite nel corso degli anni e tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno ora penso sia che più persone ci ascoltino. Speriamo che accada.

On the occasion of the release of the album “Severance”, on Non Serviam Records label, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tenebris, bassist of the Swedish black metal band MIST OF MISERY, founded in 2010 in the northern suburbs of Stockholm with the intention of creating music based on melancholy, darkness, depression and atmosphere.
Hi, welcome to Tuttorock, tell me about “Severance”, this amazing new album, why did you decide to make a concept album and why did you decide to talk about this story set in 19th century rural England?
We had long thought about making a concept album as far back as the last album and we finally decided that it was time to try to do just that. As it was something we had never done before it was quite a challenge to tie up the story and make everything fit to each individual song. We all agreed that the story that we had come up with should take place in the 19th century and we thought it was only fitting that it take place in rural England.
I have to congratulate you because listening to the album really feels like taking a step back in time, did you have the same feeling recording and then listening to the album?
Absolutely. It’s what we set out to do from the beginning and what we focused on during the whole writing process. We wanted the lyrics to reflect that as well and I think we accomplished that.
How long did it take you to complete the songs?
I would say the whole process took about two years in total, not counting the recording of the album.
Did you start with the lyrics or the sounds first?
Mortuz Denatus and I wrote all the music first. Only when all the music was written and orchestrated did I begin writing the lyrics. By then we had most of the details of the story mapped out. After we had released “Unalterable” Mist of Misery consisted of three members and all three of us sat down to come up with the story that became “Severance”. It was just a matter of writing the actual words, which was quite a challenge I will say.
What feedback are you getting?
The feedback has been absolutely amazing. Some magazines have even named it one of the top albums of the year. Of course, we knew we had made quite an amazing album as we ourselves had listened to the album hundreds of times in all its forms, from the start to completion, before it was even released but it’s good to see that others agreed with us on this.
You have signed with the prestigious label “Non Serviam Records”, are you satisfied with this choice?
Yes definitely. Ricardo of Non Serviam Records is very passionate about the music his label releases and he is a hard working and dedicated man. We are more than pleased with the promotion of the album that Non Serviam Records has done.
Who made the artwork?
The artwork for the album as well as the previous one was painted by a friend of ours, Alice Ruitenberg, also known as Sulphuris.
The band consists of 3 elements, are you planning to add other members in the future?
We recruited a new vocalist for this album, Änglamakaren, who is also the vocalist of Night Crowned. He decided after the recording of the vocals to become a permanent member of Mist of Misery so we currently consist of four members. We plan to recruit an additional guitarist in the near future.
Will the next one be a concept album too?
It is our plan to continue on this path as we think it fits our music perfectly, so that is what we will strive for. There can be no guarantees of course but it’s what we aim for.
Are you planning a tour? Will you also come to Italy?
There are no tours planned unfortunately but we would very much like to play live as much as possible in Italy as well as the rest of Europe. Let’s hope some opportunity will come up in the near future and that more people open their eyes to Mist of Misery. We have released quite a few good releases over the years and all we need now I think is for more people to hear us. Let’s hope that happens.
