CROSSING RUBICON – Intervista al cantante e fondatore Cenk Eroglu
I Crossing Rubicon sono la nuova band di Cenk Enoglu, ex chitarrista dei Winger, con John Bisaha alla voce, cantante dei The Babys. Con questa nuova band mette una voce in più nel panorama dell’AOR e dell’hard rock melodico con l’album “Perfect Storm” (leggi qui la recensione) . Ho avuto il piacere di intervistarlo e di seguito l’intervista.
Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock, come nascono i Crossing Rubicon?
Ho registrato i miei demo tra il 1984 e il 1998 e ho scritto più di 500 canzoni, tutte sono puro rock melodico classico… Ho cercato per anni di trovare il giusto partner cantante/cantautore e era una missione impossibile. Forse è per questo che non ho mai fatto “quell’album” fino ad ora! Inoltre non volevo un cantante famoso, stavo cercando un partner. Quando la mia ricerca è finita senza successo, ho contattato la Frontiers Records e mi hanno messo in contatto con John Bisaha e così sono nati i Crossing Rubicon.
Siete una band di soli due elementi, perché?
All’inizio abbiamo iniziato come duo, quando sono iniziate le registrazioni I miei due figli si sono uniti al processo. Efe Eroglu condivide chitarre e tastiere con me e Reis Ali Eroglu è alla batteria. Siamo una vera band ora.
C’è un po’ di storia e di Italia nel nome, a cui si riferisce al fiume Rubicone?
(Sì quel fiume in Italia che Cesare ha attraversato – se conosci la storia). Sono stato sulla riva di quel fiume per molti anni e l’ho attraversato quando io e John abbiamo unito le forze.. Attraversare il Rubicone: procedere deliberatamente oltre un punto di non ritorno.
Ci sono anche diversi ospiti nell’album, Ray Coburn, Reb Beach, Pat Mastellotto, come sono stati coinvolti?
Pat Mastelotto è un mentore e un grande amico, ci siamo conosciuti negli anni ’90
e abbiamo lavorato molto insieme per molti” progetti. Era così gentile come sempre e suonato nella mia canzone “Crash & Burn”, Ray Coburn, ero e sono ancora un grande fan della sua musica. Ho sempre pensato che fosse l’anima della band canadese Honeymoon Suite, ci siamo anche incontrati verso la fine degli anni ’90 e lui ha usato il suo tocco magico su “Crash & Burn” e “Get Away”. Reb Beach, anch’io ero disposto ad averlo come ospite visto che è il mio amico della band di Winger e anche il mio eroe.. sfortunatamente non abbiamo potuto fallo a causa dei nostri impegni.. non è nell’album ma nel mio cuore.
Il genere musicale di Crossing Rubicon è AOR e hard rock melodico, perché questa scelta?
Sono un fan di questa musica, un fan sfegatato.. ci sono moltissime band oggi si fanno chiamare AOR o Melodic Rock. Ma per me la maggior parte sono solo un’ombra del passato. La grande scrittura di canzoni è la chiave di questa musica! La maggior parte delle canzoni di quelle band suona come un lavoro di patch alle mie orecchie.. Per me AOR/Melodic Rock sono i Foreigner (soprattutto IV) i Night Ranger (7 Wishes/ Big Life era), i Survivor(era Vital Signs).Quindi volevo fare un vero album di AOR vecchia scuola, concentrandomi su grandi melodie con un cantante emozionante e potente, con grandi chitarre e tastiere..
con potenti backvocal e un mix pulito e incisivo.. Sono davvero felice del risultato.
Il significato del titolo “Perfect Storm” e dei testi?
Si tratta di… se mai perdi la fede, se mai ti senti sconfitto nella vita.. alzati, tieni la testa sopra l’acqua.. Cambia.. E sii la tempesta perfetta.. combatti e continua a camminare sotto il fuoco. Alla fine raggiungerai il tuo sogno.
Come hai conosciuto la Frontiers Records?
Attraverso il mio primo album all’estero Xcarnation – Grounded. Che è stato rilasciato nel 2005 ed era rock industriale. E devo dire.. Se questo tipo di musica è ancora qui oggi sono la ragione principale e ovviamente i veri fan. Hanno mantenuto e continuano a mantenere viva la fiamma. Sono la casa dell’ AOR.
Come sono nate le canzoni dell’album? Da un riff o dal testo?
Tutti i brani (tranne “Scar”/”Crash & Burn”/”100 Thousand Years”, sono nati tutti nel mio Tascam Porta One Mini Studio come demo. indietro nel tempo.. ovviamente quando ho prodotto questo album.. ho creato/aggiunto moltodi roba extra. Le canzoni mi vengono in tutte le forme possibili… con un riff di chitarra, un suono di synth, una progressione di accordi o solo una melodia… testo… tutto è possibile.
Crossing Rubicon è una band che durerà nel tempo e stai preparando un tour?
Ho materiale per almeno altri 5 album.. quindi sì, continueremo a farlo. Quello che ho pianificato e arrangiato può essere suonato proprio come l’album anche sul palco. Anche meglio.

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock, how are Crossing Rubicon born?
I recorded my demos between 1984 and 1998 and wrote more than 500 songs, all of which are pure , classic melodic rock … I tried to find the right Singer/Songwriter partner for years and it was an impossible mission. Maybe that’s why I have never made “that” album until now ! Also I didnt want a well known singer , I was looking for a partner. When my search was over with no success I reached out Frontiers Records and they hooked me up with John Bisaha and Crossing Rubicon was born.
You are a band of only two elements, why?
In the beginning we started as a duo , when the recordings started My two sons joined in the proccess . Efe Eroglu sharing guitars & keyboards with me and Reis Ali Eroglu is on drums. We are a real band now.
There is a bit of history and Italy in the name, does Crossing Rubicon refer to the Italian river?
(Yes that river in Italy , Ceasar crossed – if you know the story) I was on the edge of that river for many years and I crossed it when John and I joined forces .. Crossing the Rubicon : deliberately proceeding past a point of no return.
There are also various guests on the album Ray Coburn, Reb Beach, Pat Mastellotto, how were they involved?
Pat Mastelotto is a mentor and a great friend , we met in the 90’s and we did a lot of work together for many projects. He was so kind as always and played on my song “Crash & Burn” , Ray Coburn , I was and I’m still a big fan of his music. I always thought he was the soul of the Canadian Band Honeymoon Suite we also met around the late 90’s and he used his magical touch on “Crash & Burn” and “Get Away”. Reb Beach , I was willing to have him as a guest too since he is my band pal from Winger and also my hero.. unfortunatly we couldnt do it because of our schedules.. he is not in the album but in my heart.
The musical genre of Crossing Rubicon is AOR and melodichard rock, why this choice?
I am a fan of this music , a hardcore fan .. there are many many bands today calling themselves AOR or Melodic Rock. But for me the most are only a shadow of the past . Great song writing is the key for this music ! Most of the songs from those bands sounds like a patch work to my ears.. For me AOR / Melodic Rock is Foreigner (IV especially) Night Ranger (7 wishes/Big Life era) Survivor (Vital Signs era) So I wanted to do a real old school Aor album , focusing on great melodies with an emotional , powerful singer , with great guitars and keyboards.. with powerful backvocals and a clean punchy mix .. I am really happy with the result.
The meaning of the title “Perfect Storm” and the lyrics?
Its about .. if you ever lose your faith , if you ever feel defeated in life.. stand up , keep your head above the water .. Change.. And be the Perfect Storm.. fight back & keep walking under fire You will reach your dream at the end.
How did you know Frontiers Records?
Through my first overseas album Xcarnation – Grounded Which was released in 2005 and it was industrial rock. And I have to say .. If this kind of music is still here today. they are the main reason and the real fans of course. They kept and still keeping the flame alive. They are the home of AOR.
How were the songs on the album born? From a riff or from the text?
All songs (except “Scar”/“Crash & Burn”/“100 Thousand Years”. Were all born in my Tascam Porta One Mini Studio as demos back in the day.. ofcourse when I produced this album .. I made/added a lot of extra stuff. Songs come to me in all possible forms.. with a gtr riff , a synth sound a chord progression or just a melody.. text.. all possible.
Is Crossing Rubicon a band that will last over time and are youpreparing a tour?
I have material for at least 5 more albums.. so yes we will keep on doing it. What I planned and arranged can be played just like the album on stage too. Even better.
