LUKE SITAL-SINGH – Intervista al cantautore britannico
In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album “Dressing Like A Stranger” (Nettwerk Music Group – Bertus), ho avuto il piacere di intervistare il cantautore britannico Luke Sital-Singh, i cui precedenti brani hanno fatto da colonna sonora a note serie tv, tra cui Grey’s Anatomy. Luke si esibirà martedì 6 settembre al Fabrique di Milano.
Ciao Luke, benvenuto su Tuttorock, parliamo del tuo nuovo album, “Dressing Like A Stranger”, perché questo titolo?
Il motivo principale è che “Dressing Like A Stranger” è stata la prima canzone che ho scritto e che mi ha dato la consapevolezza che io stessi facendo un nuovo album. Aveva un nuovo sound che mi è sembrato fresco e quindi mi è sembrato un ottimo titolo per il disco.
Canzoni ispirate dal tuo trasferimento da Londra a Los Angeles. Quali sono le principali differenze che hai notato tra queste due città?
Penso che il meteo sia la differenza principale. C’è anche una buona cultura riguardante la collaborazione, anche se le persone sono molto impegnate a Los Angeles o amano sembrarle. LA è anche enorme e ci vogliono anni per arrivare ovunque, quindi le persone tendono a rimanere nelle loro zone mentre Londra è molto ben collegata e puoi spostarti da una parte all’altra con la metropolitana molto facilmente. Mi manca questo.
Quanto ti ha cambiato questo trasferimento come persona e come musicista?
Questo è fondamentalmente il tema dell’album. Sono cambiato molto?! Non lo so. Penso che come musicista io abbia acquisito fiducia. Sono un co-autore e produttore molto più sicuro di sé che lavora sulla musica di altre persone. Aspiro a fare di più in questo senso e ho avuto buone opportunità a Los Angeles.
Mi è piaciuto molto l’intero album, se dovessi scegliere una canzone direi “California”, tu, se diventassi un tuo stesso ascoltatore, avresti una canzone che preferisci?
“Dressing Like A Stranger” è la mia preferita.
Parlami un po’ di questa chitarra che hai comprato a Los Angeles, è stato amore a prima vista?
È stato più come un’amore al primo suono. Non è una chitarra dall’aspetto particolarmente bello, ma ha un suono davvero unico. È stata chiamata “rubber bridge guitar” (tradotto letteralmente come “chitarra dal ponte di gomma” – ndr) e un ragazzo, Reuben Cox, l’ha costruita a Los Angeles. Puoi ascoltarla in molti grandi dischi in questi giorni. Per me era esattamente ciò di cui avevo bisogno per aiutarmi a scrivere e registrare questo album. Il suo suono mi ha portato in un nuovo spazio mentale.
Come nasce solitamente una tua canzone?
In molti modi diversi. Ma direi che le mie canzoni preferite appaiono ancora dal nulla. Mi siedo semplicemente con una chitarra o al pianoforte e l’intera canzone cade fuori da me. Ancora non capisco come ciò accada, ma sono grato quando succede.
Come ci si sente a sentire la propria canzone mentre si guarda un episodio di una serie famosa come Grey’s Anatomy?
È molto bello anche se onestamente non mi sembra mai al posto giusto. Poiché è la mia canzone, mi distraggo molto, quindi di solito mi rovina la scena! Ma spero che per altre persone funzioni bene.
Sei in tournée in Europa, come vengono accolte le tue nuove canzoni?
Penso abbastanza bene. Finora il pubblico è stato fantastico. Molto rispettoso e tranquillo per il mio set. A volte applaudono alle nuove canzoni e ciò mi fa sentire bene.
Stai già scrivendo nuove canzoni per un futuro nuovo album?
Ho già alcune canzoni registrate che potrebbero essere pubblicate presto su un EP ma non ho ancora iniziato a pensare adeguatamente al prossimo album. Di solito non riesco ad andare avanti fin quando l’ultimo album non è uscito, lo lascio andare e poi posso iniziare a immaginare cosa verrà dopo.
Grazie mille per il tuo tempo, vuoi aggiungere qualcosa per chiudere l’intervista?
Spero solo che le persone si prendano il tempo per ascoltare il mio album. Non è un album che ti grida in faccia, è lento e meditativo, discreto e sottile ed è così che voglio sempre da me. Spero solo di trovare persone che apprezzano ancora quei valori in questi tempi.

On the occasion of the release of the new album “Dressing Like A Stranger” (Nettwerk Music Group – Bertus), I had the pleasure of interviewing the British singer-songwriter Luke Sital-Singh, whose previous songs have been the soundtrack to well-known TV series, including Grey’s Anatomy. Luke will perform on Tuesday 6 September at the Fabrique in Milan.
Hi Luke, welcome to Tuttorock, let’s talk about your new album, “Dressing Like A Stranger”, why this title?
The main reason is “Dressing Like A Stranger” was the first song i wrote that felt like i was making a new album. It had a new sound and felt fresh to me so that felt like a great title for the record.
Songs inspired by your move from London to Los Angeles. What are the main differences you’ve noticed between these two cities?
I think the weather is the main thing. There is also a good culture of collaboration, although people are very busy in LA or like to look like they are. LA is also huge and takes ages to get anywhere so people tend to stay in their areas. Whereas London is very well connected and you can get from one side to the other on the tube very easily. I miss that.
How much has this transfer changed you as a person and as a musician?
That is basically the theme of the album. Have i changed much at all?! I don’t know. I think as a musician i have grown in confidence. I am a much more confidence co-writer and producer working on other peoples music. That is something i aspire to do more of and have had good opportunities in LA doing that.
I really enjoyed the whole album, if I had to choose a song I would say “California”, if you turned into a your listener, would you have a song that you prefer?
Dressing Like A Stranger is my favourite.
Tell me a little about this guitar you bought in Los Angeles, was it love at first sight?
It was more like love at first sound. It’s not a particularly gorgeous looking guitar, but it has such a unique sound. It’s called a rubber bridge guitar and a guy called Reuben Cox makes them out in LA. You can hear them on a lot of big records these days. For me it was exactly what i needed to help write and record this album. The sound of it took me to a new headspace.
How is a your song usually born?
In many different ways. But i’d say my favourite songs still just appear out of nowhere. I’ll just sit down with a guitar or piano and the entire song just falls out of me. Still don’t understand how that happens but i’m grateful when it does.
How does it feel to hear your own song while watching an episode of a famous series like Grey’s Anatomy?
It’s very cool although honestly it never seems right to me. Because it’s my song i get very distracted by it so it usually ruins the scene for me! But I hope for other people it works well.
You are touring Europe, how are your new songs received?
I think pretty good. The audiences have been amazing so far. Very respectful and quiet for my set. Sometimes clapping along to the new songs which feels good.
Are you already writing new songs for a future new album?
I have a few songs already recorded that might be released on an EP soon. But i haven’t begun properly thinking about the next album yet. I usually can’t move on until the last album is released and i can let it go and then i can start imagining what is next.
Thank you very much for your time, would you like to add something to close the interview?
I just hope people will take the time to listen to my album. It’s not a shout in your face album. It’s slow and mediative and understated and subtle and that’s how i always want to me. I just hope i can find people who still appreciate those values these days.
