FRÉDÉRIC LO – Il disco e l’amicizia con Peter Doherty
Ho avuto il piacere di intervistare il compositore e produttore francese Frédéric Lo che, arrangiando e musicando i testi di Peter Doherty, ha creato insieme all’artista britannico il fantastico album “The Fantasy Life Of Poetry & Crime” (Strap Originals).
Ciao Frédéric, benvenuto su Tuttorock, iniziamo parlando di questo disco che nasce dalla collaborazione tra te e Peter Doherty, “The Fantasy Life Of Poetry & Crime”, che riscontri stai avendo?
Ciao Marco! È stato un grande incontro tra due ragazzi, ma come produttore mi chiedo sempre se è stato davvero tutto bello. Sai cosa voglio dire? Non sai mai se stai veramente offrendo buona musica alla gente, loro potrebbero amarla o potrebbero odiarla. Fin dall’inizio io e Peter ci siamo sentiti molto bene insieme, un qualcosa di veramente speciale, ma non abbiamo mai pensato che le persone avrebbero adorato il nostro album in Francia, per esempio, e invece ci siamo accorti che gradivano la nostra musica. Poi abbiamo ricevuto un feedback davvero straordinario anche in Inghilterra.
Quando e come vi siete conosciuti tu e Peter?
Ho incontrato Peter in occasione della mia volontà di fare un album tributo a Daniel Darc. Era un artista francese, ho fatto un disco con lui quasi 20 anni fa. Negli anni Ottanta faceva parte di una band post punk new wave chiamata Taxi Girl.
È morto nove anni fa, abbiamo realizzato tre album insieme e volevo rendergli un tributo per celebrare la nostra amicizia. Ho incontrato due ragazzi che amano davvero la musica e che mi hanno aiutato nella produzione di questo album. Incontrai Peter durante una registrazione dei Babyshambles, poi sono riuscito a mettermi in contatto con lui, cosa difficile perché Peter non ha un cellulare, e gli ho suggerito di fare una cover di un brano di Daniel. Peter amava il modo in cui suonavo, amava il mio lavoro, abbiamo bevuto delle birre e abbiamo iniziato a chiacchierare e a suonare, poi è tornato e abbiamo registrato le canzoni, la cosa davvero sorprendente di questa storia è che Peter vive a Étretat, in Normandia, vicino al lungomare. Il mio amico Antoine, che mi ha fatto conoscere Peter, vive a Parigi, ma ha una casa meravigliosa proprio a Étretat, mi ha dato le chiavi di casa per registrare la prima traccia poi siamo stati lì per un po’ e abbiamo registrato l’intero album, è stato bellissimo.
Lui è un poeta e ha trovato le parole giuste per le mie melodie.
Molti dicono che da quando Peter si è trasferito in Francia e si è sposato è un uomo nuovo, è così?
Sai, è bellissimo quando incontri qualcuno di importante nella tua vita. Ho passato la mia vita facendo musica e cercando di fare qualcosa di buono, quando ho incontrato Peter lui ha davvero cambiato la mia vita e spero di aver contribuito un po’ a dargli la serenità che vedo in lui ora.
Gli spettacoli che state facendo sono tutti con la band al completo e anche con gli archi?
Non per tutti gli spettacoli. C’è una band che ho creato per il promo in Francia. Nel Regno Unito abbiamo fatto uno spettacolo acustico promozionale, Peter cantava e io suonavo la chitarra acustica. Sua moglie suonava le tastiere. Per gli ultimi spettacoli di maggio abbiamo avuto un bassista e un batterista e a volte abbiamo anche il quartetto d’archi.
La speranza di tutti noi è che questo progetto includa più dischi in futuro, giusto?
Sì, con Peter vogliamo fare più canzoni insieme.
Eravamo in tournée in Inghilterra ed è stato meraviglioso per me, ho visto che era lo stesso per lui e l’ho visto negli occhi del pubblico inglese. All’inizio sapevo che gli inglesi amano Peter ma non potevo sapere quanto avrebbero potuto amare me.
Sai cosa voglio dire? È un’amicizia di tre anni e vogliamo continuarla in futuro.
Verrete anche in Italia?
Mi piacerebbe Marco! Quando le persone come te mi chiedono “verrai a casa mia?” io dico, sì, per favore trovaci un luogo dove potremmo suonare!

I had the pleasure of interviewing the French composer and producer Frédéric Lo who, arranging and setting the lyrics of Peter Doherty to music, created together with him the amazing album “The Fantasy Life Of Poetry & Crime” (Strap Originals).
Hi Frédéric, welcome to Tuttorock, let’s start by talking about this record that was born from the collaboration between you and Peter Doherty, “The Fantasy Life Of Poetry & Crime”, what feedback are you having?
Hi Marco! It was a great meeting between two guys but as a producer I’m always wondering if it was it really good. You know what I mean? You never know if you are offering good music to the people. They could love it or they could hate it. From the very start me and Peter felt very well together, like something really special but we never thought that people would love our album in France, for example, and instead we found that they liked our music. Then we got really amazing feedback in England too.
When and how did you and Peter meet?
I met Peter because I wanted to make a tribute album to Daniel Darc. He was a French artist, I made an album with him almost 20 years ago. In the 1980s he was part of a post punk new wave band called Taxi Girl.
He died nine years ago. We made three albums together and I wanted to pay him a tribute to celebrate our friendship. I met two guys who really loved music and who helped me in the production of this album. I met Peter during a Babyshambles recording, then I managed to get in touch with him, which is difficult because Peter doesn’t have a cell phone, and I suggested he do a cover of Daniel. He loved the way I played, he loved my job, we drank some beers and started chatting and playing. Then he came back and we recorded the songs, the really surprising thing about this story is that Peter lives in Étretat, near the seafront. My friend Antoine, who introduced me to Peter, lives in Paris, but he has a wonderful house right in Étretat, he gave me the house keys to record the first track then we were there for a while and we recorded the whole album, it was beautiful.
He is a poet and has found the right words for my melodies.
Many say that since Peter moved to France and got married he is a new man, is that right?
You know, it’s great when you meet someone important in your life. I have spent my life making music and trying to do something good, when I met Peter he really changed my life and I hope I have contributed a little to give him the serenity that I see in him now.
Are the shows you are doing all with the full band and strings too?
Not for the all the shows. There is a band I’ve made for the promo in France. In the UK we made a promotional acoustic show. Peter sang and I played acoustic guitar. Peter’s wife was playing keyboards. For the last shows in May we had a bass player and a drummer. Sometimes we have also the string quartet.
The hope of all of us is that this project will include more records in the future, right?
Yeah, with Peter we want to do more songs together.
We were on the road in England and it was so wonderful for me and I saw it was the same for him and I saw that in the eye of the English audience. I knew at the beginning that English people love Peter but I couldn’t believe how much they would love me. You know what I mean? It’s a three year friendship and we want to continue it.
Will you also come to Italy?
I’d love to Marco! When people like you ask me “will you come in my home?” I say, yes, please find us a venue where we could play!
