SEMBLANT – Intervista alla cantante Mizuho Lin

La band brasiliana torna con un ottimo nuovo album “Vermillion Eclipse”, potente ed energico, caratterizzato dalla potenza della voce della frontwoman Mizuho Lin, dal suo carisma e anche dal suo fascino. Ma la parola a Mizuho Lin per raccontarci la band e il  uovo album. Di seguito il resoconto dell’intervista con la cantante.

Ciao Mizuho, ​​benvenuta su Tuttorock. La prima domanda che ti pongo è quella di parlare della storia di Semblant. Come è nata la band?
Ciao Tuttorock! Beh.. in realtà la band ha iniziato con Sergio (voce maschile) e J. Augusto (tastiere) nel 2006. Hanno suonato alcune cover fino a quando hanno finalmente pubblicato il loro primo EP “Behold The Real Semblant” nel 2008. Quella volta la formazione era diversa. Mi sono unita alla band nel 2010, subito dopo l’uscita del primo album “Last Night Of Mortality”. L’ex cantante ha lasciato la band poche settimane prima dell’uscita dell’album e mi ricordo di essermi unita alla band come… 2 settimane prima dell’uscita dell’album. Per fortuna tutto ha funzionato bene!

Qual è il significato del nome Semblant?
Puoi capire meglio dalla definizione della parola stessa. L’aspetto di qualcuno. Come ci mostriamo al mondo, i sentimenti nei nostri volti. Come il mondo può vederci.

Perché la scelta delle due voci, maschile e femminile?
Beh… la band è iniziata con Sergio, Guto e alcuni loro amici. Erano tutti collegati e suonavano alcune cover dei Lacuna Coil e degli Evanescence.

12 anni di attività, sintetizzali in poche parole, emozioni, entusiasmi ma anche delusioni e ripensamenti se ce ne sono.
In realtà la band è molto più vecchia! La band è in attività da 16 anni. Sono nella band da 12 anni quindi posso dirti che abbiamo passato molti momenti difficili in questo periodo. All’inizio nessuno credeva in noi e ricevevamo molte opinioni infondate del tipo “Dovresti fare questo o quello. Dovresti cantare così o così”.. abbiamo provato più volte a mostrare il nostro lavoro. È stato un lavoro continuo su Internet. Ogni singola cosa che abbiamo ottenuto, pensavamo che sarebbe stata “l’occasione della nostra vita”, ma sai… eravamo giovani! Per fortuna tutto è passato, siamo rimasti forti e ce l’abbiamo fatta da soli. Tutto ciò che abbiamo passato, anche le delusioni, è una conoscenza e tutto ciò lo abbiamo riflesso nei nostri album.

3 album e uno appena uscito, “Vermillion Eclipse”. Quali sono le differenze tra loro?
Secondo me sono tutti collegati con la stessa essenza dal primo. “Lunar Manifesto” è stato un album killer e ci ha messo negli occhi di tuttai; “Obscura” è stato un album molto maturo e il più personale che abbiamo mai fatto. Parliamo di tutte le cose che dovevamo attraversare per avere finalmente la nostra possibilità. È quasi come mostrare la realtà alle persone, mostrare che niente è perfetto come sembra. “Vermilion Eclipse” rappresenta tutto ciò che siamo nel nostro modo migliore. Il meglio delle nostre tecniche e tutta la sete di vincere nella vita.

Parlami ora del nuovo album, del suo processo compositivo.
E’ stato diverso dagli album precedenti! L’abbiamo fatto durante la pandemia, quindi non abbiamo mai avuto la possibilità di sederci insieme per comporre o provare le canzoni. Abbiamo fatto tutto online inviandoci le composizioni e registrando la pre-produzione a casa. Fortunatamente molti di noi hanno degli home studio, quindi ha funzionato bene. Ma è stato diverso e intenso, ci siamo incontrati solo nei giorni di registrazione ufficiale!

Quale è il significato dei testi e del titolo?
Beh… non è un concept album quindi i testi non sono centrati su un solo tema. In realtà abbiamo sempre fatto così. Troverai canzoni sui nostri sentimenti e altri su storie che creiamo o anche basate su film, serie, ecc.

Qual è il significato del disegno della copertina? Ha una connessione con i testi?
In realtà sì! La prima cosa che abbiamo deciso quando stavamo pensando alla copertina è che volevamo essere qualcosa di rosso. A quel tempo avevamo già il titolo dell’album. Penso che il colore possa essere molto significativo poiché possiamo metterlo in relazione con il sangue e la vita. Come ho detto prima, abbiamo composto tutto l’album durante la pandemia, guardando le cattive notizie in tutto il mondo ogni giorno. È qualcosa che non sarà mai dimenticato. La vita e la morte intorno a noi, come il rosso e il nero nella nostra copertina.

Come definisci il genere musicale di Semblant?
Non mi piace descriverlo o cercare più di inserire la nostra band in un genere.. Non pensiamo mai “hmm quella canzone dovrebbe suonare così o così” ce la facciamo e basta. Abbiamo canzoni pesanti e oscure e allo stesso tempo melodiche e profonde e intense. Definire qualcosa è metterci in una scatola, e non lo vogliamo assolutamente! Siamo aperti a cose nuove ogni volta che abbiamo la sensazione di farlo.

Quali sono le tue influenze musicali? I migliori cantanti e band?
Ognuno nella band ha delle influenze particolari. Parlando di me, mi sono sempre piaciute le band vocali femminili come Nightwish, After Forever, Epica, Within Temptation, Tristania e tante altre..

Hai altre passioni oltre alla musica?
Amo ballare!

Parlami del nuovo tour, quanto è importante per te suonare dal vivo?
Penso che sia l’unico modo in cui possiamo davvero entrare in contatto con i nostri fan. Suonare dal vivo è forse la cosa migliore nell’avere una band. Avere l’opportunità di ascoltare le persone che cantano le nostre canzoni è semplicemente fantastico. Con quel tour abbiamo sognato tanto tempo fa… di raggiungere finalmente i nostri fan fuori dal nostro paese. Siamo molto entusiasti di questo!

Abbiamo vissuto 2 anni difficili, la pandemia, ora questi venti di guerra. Come stai vivendo tutto questo? Cosa può fare la musica?
Sì, alcuni di noi nella band hanno perso i propri genitori durante questo periodo, quindi stiamo cercando di catturare la nostra forza nella nostra musica.

Quale sarà il futuro del Semblant?
Non voglio più creare aspettative. Se c’è qualcosa che ho imparato in questa pandemia è “vivere ora”. Sono concentrata sulla promozione di “Vermilion Eclipse” e del nostro tour ora, il futuro è solo una conseguenza.

Hi Mizuho, ​​welcome to Tuttorock. The first question I ask you is to talk about the history of Semblant. How was the band born?
Hello Tuttorock! Well.. actually the band started with Sergio (male vocals) and J. Augusto (keyboards) in 2006. They used to play some covers until finally they released their first EP “Behold The Real Semblant” in 2008.. That time all the lineup was different. I joined the band in 2010, right after the first full length album “Last Night of Mortality” was out. The former vocalist left the band a few weeks before the album came out and I remember of joining the band like… 2 weeks before the release show of that album. Fortunately everything worked fine!

What is the meaning of the name Semblant?
You can understand better by the definition of the word itself. The appearance of someone. How we show ourselves to the world, the feelings in our faces. How the world can see us.

Why the choice of the two voices, male and female?
Well… the band started with Sergio, Guto and some friends of them. They were all connected and they used to play some Lacuna Coil and Evanescence covers.

12 years of activity, summarize them in a few words, emotions, enthusiasms but also disappointments and second thoughts if there are any.
Actually the band is way older than that! The band is on activity for 16 years. I’m in the band for 12 years so I can tell you we passed through a lot of hard times in this period. In the beginning, nobody believed in us and we used to get lots of baseless opinion like “You should do this or that. You should sing that way or that”.. we tried several times to show our work. It was a non-stop work in the internet. Every single thing we got, we thought it would be “the chance of our lives” but you know… we were young! Fortunately everything passed, we stayed strong and we did it by ourselves. Everything we passed, even the disappointments, is a knowledge and we reflected all that in our albums.

3 albums and one upcoming “Vermillion Eclipse”. What are the differences between them?
In my opinion all of them are connected with the same essence since the first one. Lunar Manifesto was a killer album and put us into the eyes of the whole word; Obscura was a very mature and the most personal album we ever did. We talk about all the things we needed to pass through to finally get our chance. Is almost like showing the reality to people, showing that nothing is perfect as it seems. Vermilion Eclipse represent everything we are in our best ways. The best of our tecniques and all the  thirst of winning in life.

Tell me now about the new album, its compositional process?
It was different from the previous albums! We did it in the pandemic so we never had the chance to seat together to compose or even to rehearse the songs. We did it all online sending the compositions to each other and recording the pre-production at home. Fortunately many of us have home studios, so it worked good. But it was different and intense, we only met each other on the official recording days!

What is the meaning of the lyrics and the title?
Well.. it’s not a concept album so the lyrics are not centered in only one theme. Actually we always did that way. You’ll find songs about our feelings and others about stories we create or even based on movies, series etc.

What is the meaning of the cover design? Does it have a connection with the lyrics?
Actually yes! The first thing we decided when we were thinking about the cover art is that we wanted to be something red. At that time we already had the title of the album. I think that color can be very meaningful since we can relate it to blood and life. As I said before, we compose all the album in the pandemic watching bad news worldwide everyday. It’s something that will never be forgotten. The life and death around us, as the red and black in our cover art.

How to define the musical genre of Semblant?
I don’t like to describe it or try to put our band in a genre anymore.. We never think like “hmm that song should sound like this or like that” we just make it. We have heavy and dark songs and at the same time melodic and deep intense songs. To define something is to put ourselves in a box, and we absolutely dont want that! We are open to new things everytime we got the feeling to do that.

What are your musical influences? The best singers and bands?
Each one in the band has some particular influences. Talking about me, I was always into female vocal bands like Nightwish, After Forever, Epica, Within Temptation,Tristania and so many others..

Do you have other passions besides music?
I love to dance!

Tell me about the new tour, how important is it for you to play live?
I think that’s the only way we can really connect with our fans. To play live is maybe the best thing in having a band. To have the opportunity to hear the people singing our songs is just amazing. We dreamed with that tour a long time ago.. to finally reach our fans outside our own country. We’re very excited to that!

We have lived through 2 difficult years, the pandemic, now these winds of war. How are you experiencing all this? What can music do?
Yes, some of us in the band lost our parents during this time so we’re trying to catch our strength in our music.

What will be the future of the Semblant! What are your expectations?
I don’t want to create expectations anymore. If there is something I learned in this pandemic is to “live now”. I’m focus on the promotion of Vermilion Eclipse and our tour now, the future is just a consequence.
