DRAGONY – Il nuovo album “Viribus Unitis”

In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album “Viribus Unitis”, prevista per il 15 gennaio su etichetta Napalm Records, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Siegfried Samer, cantante della symphonic power metal band austriaca Dragony, attiva dal 2007.

Ciao Siegfried, benvenuto sulle pagine di Tuttorock, come stai in generale?

Date le circostanze, abbastanza bene! Personalmente ho ancora molto da lavorare mentre si avvicina la fine dell’anno, quindi non posso davvero lamentarmi! Spero che anche tutti voi stiate bene!

Parliamo un po’ di questo nuovo bellissimo album, perché avete scelto il titolo “Viribus Unitis”?

Il titolo è in realtà il motto ufficiale dell’ex imperatore austriaco Francesco Giuseppe I d’Austria, e si traduce dal latino in “Con le forze unite”, che penso sia un titolo veramente fantastico per un album Power Metal in sé e per sé! E ovviamente si adatta perfettamente alla trama e al concetto del nostro album.

Com’è stato il processo di scrittura delle canzoni, avete pensato prima ai testi o alle melodie?

Di solito provo prima a creare una melodia orecchiabile per un ritornello, e poi scrivo gli accordi, le armonie e il ritmo approssimativo attorno ad essa. Successivamente, elaboriamo insieme l’arrangiamento completo in studio. I testi sono l’ultima cosa di cui mi prendo cura di solito, e per fortuna mi vengono abbastanza facilmente!

Avete raccontato la storia del vostro paese, l’Austria, in un modo diverso, quanto siete appassionati di storia?

Normalmente non siamo davvero esperti di storia, ahah! Tuttavia, quando ci è venuta l’idea di una storia di “linea del tempo steampunk alternativa” riguardante gli ultimi imperatori asburgici d’Austria, ovviamente abbiamo dovuto fare un bel po’ di ricerche per scoprire cosa davvero fosse successo a queste persone, e come avremmo potuto e voluto creare il nostro approccio, molto fantastico e talvolta anche assurdo, a quest’era dell’impero austriaco.

Ascoltando l’album, quale pensi sia la canzone migliore? A me piacciono tutte la mia preferita è “Love You to Death”.

Ovviamente è molto difficile scegliere un brano preferito, poiché amiamo tutte le nuove canzoni, ahah! Ma uno dei miei preferiti è sicuramente l’opener “Gods of War” che è stato co-scritto da Tommy Johansson dei Sabaton e dei Majestica e da Tomas Svedin (Symphony of Tragedy), con me che ho fornito la linea vocale e il testo. Quindi, grazie a questi autori di canzoni ospiti, la canzone aggiunge un nuovo aspetto allo spettro sonoro dei Dragony.

Lo stesso vale in realtà per “Love You To Death”, che è stata scritta da Michele Guaitoli dei Temperance e dei Visions of Atlantis!

Perché avete scelto di fare una cover di una canzone di Rainhard Fendrich, “Haben Sie Wien Schon Bei Nacht Geseh’n”?

Bene, poiché la trama del nostro album è ambientata in Austria e in particolare principalmente a Vienna, ci sembrava molto appropriato non solo produrre una cover di uno dei più famosi cantautori austriaci, ma in realtà di una sua canzone che specificamente rappresenta un inno e un omaggio alla città di Vienna! Inoltre, è stata un’esperienza abbastanza nuova per noi, poiché realizzare questa bonus track è stata la prima volta che abbiamo registrato una canzone in tedesco.

Nella vostra musica c’è molta influenza di band come Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian ecc. Quali vi hanno ispirato di più?

Per me personalmente, sono stati in primis gli Hammerfall che mi hanno avvicinato al Metal e in particolare al Power Metal, quindi si sentono sempre elementi chiari del loro sound nei nostri brani. Ma penso che il mio cantautore preferito al momento sia Tobias Sammet degli Avantasia e degli Edguy, quindi penso che la nostra musica sia probabilmente più facilmente paragonabile al suono degli Avantasia, anche se ci sono anche alcuni elementi chiari di band come Rhapsody of Fire, Freedom Call, anche Kamelot o Blind Guardian.

Com’è la scena metal in Austria oggi?

Ho la sensazione che, dopo alcuni anni in cui la scena in Austria è stata relativamente piccola, ora stia crescendo di nuovo con molte nuove band di generi molto diversi che stanno entrando nel mercato, e specialmente dall’approccio molto più professionale! Quindi si tratta di uno sviluppo molto eccitante, e ci saranno sicuramente alcuni nuovi nomi molto interessanti nella scena internazionale che verranno fuori anche dall’Austria, oltre a quelli che sono già affermati, come Belphegor, Visions of Atlantis, Serenity, Edenbridge o Harakiri For The Sky, che sono probabilmente i gruppi metal attivi austriaci più conosciuti al momento.

Come pensate di promuovere l’album in futuro, con concerti in streaming o state aspettando il momento in cui potrete tornare a suonare dal vivo?

Entrambe le cose, in realtà! Ovviamente speriamo di poter fare almeno un piccolo concerto per l’uscita dell’album a Vienna all’inizio del 2021, ma anche se ciò non sarà ancora possibile, proveremo almeno a fare un po’ di concerti in live streaming per presentare alcune canzoni estratte dal nuovo album e ovviamente anche alcuni classici del nostro repertorio! E si spera che saremo in grado di portare il nuovo album in tour alla fine del 2021 o all’inizio del 2022!

Quale concerto ricordi più volentieri e c’è un posto in particolare dove vorresti suonare?

Beh, alcuni dei miei ricordi personali preferiti dei concerti con i Dragony sono legati sicuramente ai 70.000 del Tons of Metal e al Wacken Open Air dell’anno scorso, così come ad uno show di supporto per i Blind Guardian nel 2015. Quelle sono state alcune esperienze davvero interessanti. Ma ora che me lo dici, è stato anche molto bello andare in tour con i Gamma Ray per la prima volta per promuovere il nostro album “Shadowplay” cinque anni fa, o quella volta che abbiamo suonato al Nova Rock festival, il più grande festival rock e metal in Austria… Ma onestamente, spero che presto ci potrà essere la possibilità di aggiungere altri bei ricordi a quella lista, come ad esempio suonare in Sud America, Giappone, Russia o Australia!

Sei soddisfatto di come sono andate le cose per te nel mondo della musica finora?

Assolutamente sì! Quando abbiamo iniziato nel 2007, credo che la maggior parte di noi pensasse che saremmo stati in giro forse per due o tre anni, sai, suonare alcuni concerti insieme, forse fare un EP o magari anche un album… invece siamo ancora abbastanza attivo quasi 15 anni dopo, con il nostro quarto album che ora viene pubblicato niente meno su Napalm Records, una delle migliori etichette metal del mondo!. Quindi potrei dire: “Tutto è andato meglio del previsto!”

Grazie mille per il tuo tempo, vuoi dire qualcosa ai fan italiani dei Dragony?

Grazie mille per il vostro interesse per il nostro nuovo album “Viribus Unitis” e speriamo che vi piaccia! Speriamo anche di poter tornare presto in Italia e suonare qualche concerto per voi ragazzi!!

On the occasion of the release of the new album “Viribus Unitis”, scheduled for January 15th on the Napalm Records label, I had the pleasure of interviewing Siegfried Samer, singer of the Austrian symphonic power metal band Dragony, active since 2007.

Hi Siegfried, welcome to the pages of Tuttorock how are you doing in general?

Given the circumstances, we’re doing pretty good! I personally have quite a lot of work still as the end of the year is approaching, so I can’t really complain! Hope you are all fine too!

Let’s talk a little about this new amazing album, why did you choose the title “Viribus Unitis”?

The title is actually the official motto of the former Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I., and translates from Latin to “With United Forces”, which I think is a pretty awesome title for a Power Metal album in and of itself! And of course it fits the storyline and concept of our album perfectly.

How was the process of writing the songs, did you think about the lyrics or the melodies first?

Usually I try to come up with a catchy melody for a chorus first, and then write the chords/harmonies and rough rhythm around it. Afterwards, we work out the complete arrangement in the studio together. Lyrics are the last thing I take care of usually, and they come to me quite easily thankfully!

You have told the story of your country, Austria, in a different way, how passionate you are about history?

Normally we are not really history experts, haha! However when we came up with this idea of an “alternate steampunk timeline” story for the last Habsburg emperors of Austria, we of course had to do quite a bit of research to find out what REALLY happened to these persons, and how we could and would change it to create our own, very fantastical and sometimes also absurd approach to this era of the Austrian empire.

Listening to the album again, what do you think is the best song? I like them all but my favorite is “Love You to Death”.

It’s of course very hard to pick a favorite, as we love all the new songs, haha! But one of my personal favorites is certainly the opener “Gods of War” which was co-written by Tommy Johansson from Sabaton & Majestica and Tomas Svedin (Symphony of Tragedy), with me providing the vocal line and lyrics. So due to these guest song writers, the song adds a new facet to the sound spectrum of Dragony.

The same is actually true for “Love You To Death”, which was written by Michele Guaitoli from Temperance & Visions of Atlantis!

Why did you choose to make a cover of a song by Rainhard Fendrich, “Haben Sie Wien Schon Bei Nacht Geseh’n”?

Well, since the storyline of our album is set in Austria and specifically mostly in Vienna, it was very fitting to not only produce a cover of one of Austria’s most famous singer-songwriters, but actually a song of his that specifically is an anthem and tribute to the city of Vienna! Also, it was a quite new experience for us, as making this bonus track was the first time we recorded a song in German.

In your music there is a lot of influence from bands like Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian etc., which ones have inspired you the most?

For me personally, it was Hammerfall that got me into Metal and specifically Power Metal in the first place, so there are always clear elements of the Hammerfall sound in there. But I guess my favorite songwriter at the moment is Tobias Sammet from Avantasia & Edguy, so I think our music is probably most easily compared to the Avantasia sound, even if there are also some clear elements from bands like Rhapsody of Fire, Freedom Call, Kamelot or Blind Guardian in there as well.

How is the metal scene in Austria today?

I have a feeling that after a few years of the scene in Austria being relatively small, it’s now growing again with a lot of new bands in very different genres entering the market, and especially bands with a much more professional approach! So it’s a very exciting development, and there will certainly be some very interesting new names in the international scene from Austria as well, in addition to those acts that are already more established, like Belphegor, Visions of Atlantis, Serenity, Edenbridge or Harakiri For The Sky, who are probably the most well known active metal bands from Austria at the moment.

How do you plan to promote the album in the future, with streaming concerts or are you waiting for the moment when you can go back to playing live?

Both, actually! Of course we hope we can do at least a small album release concert show in Vienna in early 2021, but even if that is not going to be possible yet, we will at least try to do a little live stream concerts to present a few songs from the new album and of course some classics from our back catalogue as well! And hopefully, we will be able to take the new album out on tour in late 2021 or early 2022!

What concert do you remember most willingly and is there a place where you would like to play?

Well some of my personal favorite concert memories with Dragony were certainly playing on the 70.000 Tons of Metal cruise and Wacken Open air last year, as well as a support show for Blind Guardian back in 2015. Those were some really cool experiences. But now that you mention it, it was also quite special to go on tour with Gamma Ray for our very first time promoting our album “Shadowplay” five years ago, or that one time we played the Nova Rock festival, the biggest rock and metal festival in Austria… But honestly, I hope that there will be a chance to add some more cool memories to that list soon, like for example playing shows in South America, Japan, Russia or Australia!

Are you satisfied with how things have gone so far for you in the world of music?

Absolutely! When we started out back in 2007, I think most of us thought that we’d be around for maybe two or three years, you know, play some shows together, maybe make an EP or maybe even an album… We didn’t really expect to be still quite active almost 15 years later, with our fourth album now being released on Napalm Records no less, one of the top metal labels in the world!. So I guess you could say: “Everything went better than expected!”
