ST. SOUTH – Intervista alla cantautrice, produttrice e polistrumentista australiana …
Ho intervistato la cantautrice, produttrice e polistrumentista australiana Olivia Gavranich per parlare un po’ del suo progetto electronic-soul St. South e del nuovo EP “Get Well Soon” che uscirà venerdì 17 luglio.
Ciao Olivia, prima di tutto benvenuta sulle pagine di Tuttorock, come stai e com’è la situazione in Australia?
Grazie per l’invito! Sono incredibilmente fortunata di essere residente nell’Australia occidentale, dove ora siamo nella fase 4 con le restrizioni alleggerite, senza contagi negli ultimi due mesi. Sfortunatamente, il numero dei malati di covid-19 è in aumento solo sulla East Coast, ma abbiamo messo in atto forti restrizioni riguardo alle frontiere, quindi speriamo di poter mantenere la nostra “bolla senza covid” qui a Perth, WA.
Qui in Italia, dove vivo io, sembra che le persone non abbiano imparato nulla, cioè sembra che il rispetto per la natura e per le altre persone siano addirittura peggiorati rispetto al periodo precedente al blocco, è così anche lì?
È davvero difficile da dire, dato che ho trascorso gran parte dell’anno completamente isolata. Da quando sono uscita dal blocco, è come se la gente di Perth avesse ritrovato un nuovo apprezzamento per le piccole cose, come prendere un caffè e abbracciare un amico. Perth ha preso molto sul serio le regole di allontanamento sociale, quindi penso che tutti noi ci rispettiamo e ci apprezziamo molto di più. Il senso di comunità è maggiore almeno qui dove vivo, a Fremantle (Perth, WA).
È meglio parlare di musica … Perché hai scelto di chiamare questo progetto electronic-soul St. South?
Sono cresciuta in una piccola città di campagna chiamata Denmark, 400 km a sud di Perth e dirigersi a sud per me significa sempre tornare a casa.
Il tuo EP di debutto “Nervous Energy”, pubblicato nel 2016, ha avuto molto successo, ora ti stai preparando a pubblicare il tuo nuovo album “Get Well Soon”, che uscirà il 17 luglio, sarà pubblicato solamente in formato digitale o anche in formato fisico?
Sia digitale che fisico! A causa del covid-19 ci sono stati ritardi nella stampa del vinile ma rilascerò un numero limitato di CD, cassette e vinili!
Nelle tue canzoni parli molto di amore e relazioni, sono gli eventi della tua vita che le ispirano?
Assolutamente. In genere scrivo sempre e solo per esperienze personali.
Come crei una canzone? Scrivi prima i testi o una base melodica o dipende dai casi?
Dipende sicuramente dall’umore e dalla condizione in cui si trova la mia testa in quel momento. La musica è stata sicuramente sempre una forma di catarsi per me. A volte mi occupo di una poesia e altre volte mi siedo al mio piano e improvviso melodie sugli accordi. A volte mi sento ispirata da un nuovo sample e passo una settimana a produrre un ritmo prima ancora di pensare a linee vocali / melodia / testi. Ho anche centinaia di memo vocali sul mio telefono, poiché penso sempre alle melodie mentre guido. Il processo è super fluido e diverso ogni volta!

Sì! Scrivo, registro e produco tutto in casa mia!
Alcune delle tue canzoni sono state incluse in serie TV come The Vampire Diaries e The Fosters, cosa provi quando guardi un episodio di quelle serie e senti un tuo brano?
In realtà non avevo mai visto The Vampire Diaries prima, quindi quando ho visto l’episodio era la prima volta che vedevo quella serie! È una sensazione così surreale, guardare una serie così popolare e sentire la tua voce in sottofondo, non c’è niente di simile. Sono stata un grande fan di The Fosters per anni, quindi ero super eccitata quando “Another Way” è stata usata in un episodio!
Per favore, parlami del tuo background musicale e di chi sono gli artisti del passato e del presente che ami.
Ascolto ancora molta della musica con la quale sono cresciuta; artisti come Elvis Costello, Tracy Chapman, Norah Jones, Paul Simon, Nina Simone. E in questi giorni sto ascoltando molto Clairo, Julia Jacklin, Frank Ocean, Orion Sun, Still Woozy, Sharon Van Etten, FKJ, Big Thief, Daniel Caeser, Sylvan Esso, Elijah, ecc. Ascolto anche molta musica house e jazz. Amo la maggior parte dei generi musicali!
Ora che hai firmato con un’importante etichetta, la Nettwerk, la tua popolarità aumenterà anche in Europa, ti piacerebbe andare in un tour europeo e magari anche venire in Italia? Pensi che un giorno sarà possibile?
Mi piacerebbe assolutamente! Quest’anno sarebbe stato l’anno in cui avrei iniziato a suonare dal vivo, ma ovviamente la situazione globale lo ha reso molto difficile. Spero di poter visitare l’Europa nei prossimi due anni, quando sarà sicuro viaggiare di nuovo.

I interviewed the Australian singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Gavranich to talk a bit about her electronic-soul project St. South and the new EP “Get Well Soon” which will be released on Friday 17th July.
Hi Olivia, first of all welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how are you and how is the situation in Australia?
Thank you for having me! I’m incredibly lucky that I’m based in Western Australia, where we are now in phase 4 of eased restrictions, with zero community transmission in the last two months. The numbers of covid-19 are unfortunately only increasing on the East Coast, but we have hard border restrictions in place so hopefully we can maintain our covid-free bubble here in Perth WA.
Here in Italy where I live, it seems that people have not learned anything, that is, respect for nature and for other people have even worsened compared to the period before the lockdown, is it so there too?
It’s really hard to say, as I’ve spent most of the year completely isolated. Since coming out of lockdown, I feel like the people of Perth have a newfound appreciation for the little things – like grabbing a coffee and hugging a friend. Perth took social distancing rules very seriously, so if anything, I feel that we all respect and appreciate one another a lot more. The sense of community is greater. At least it is where I live, in Fremantle (Perth WA).
It’s better to talk about music… Why did you choose to call this electro-soul project St. South?
I grew up in a small country town called Denmark, 400km South of Perth – heading South always means going home.
Your debut EP “Nervous Energy” released in 2016 has been very successful, now you are preparing to publish your new album “Get Well Soon”, which will be released on July 17th, will it be released in digital format or even in physical format?
There will be digital and physical! Due to covid-19 there were delays with the vinyl pressing – but I’ll be releasing a limited number of CDs, Cassette tapes and vinyls!
In your songs you talk a lot about love and relationships, are the events of your life that inspire them?
Absolutely. I generally only ever write from personal experience.
How do you create a song? Do you write lyrics or a melodic base first or does it depend on the cases?
It definitely depends on the mood, and what headspace I’m in at the time. Music has definitely always been a form of catharsis for me. Sometimes I’ll elaborate on a poem, and other times I’ll sit at my piano and improvise melodies over chords. Sometimes I’ll feel inspired by a new sample pack and I’ll spend a week solely producing a beat before even thinking about vocals/melody/lyrics. I have hundreds of voice memos on my phone too, as I always think of melodies while I’m driving. The process is super fluid and different every time!
Do you record them in your home, right?
Yep! I write, record and produce everything in my home!
Some of your songs have been included in TV series such as The Vampire Diaries and The Fosters, what do you feel when you watch an episode of those series and hear your own song?
I’d actually never seen The Vampire Diaries before, so when I watched the episode it was the first time Id’ seen the show! It’s such a surreal feeling, watching such a popular show and hearing your voice in the background – there’s nothing quite like it. I’ve been a big fan of The Fosters for years so I was super excited when ‘Another Way’ was used in an episode!
Please tell me a little about your musical background and who are the artists of the past and present that you love.
I still listen to a lot of the music I was raised on; Artists like Elvis Costello, Tracy Chapman, Norah Jones, Paul Simon, Nina Simone. And these days I’m listening to a lot of Clairo, Julia Jacklin, Frank Ocean, Orion Sun, Still Woozy, Sharon Van Etten, FKJ, Big Thief, Daniel Caeser, Sylvan Esso, Elijah Who etc. I also listen to a lot of house music and jazz. love most genres!
Now that you’ve signed up with an important label, Nettwerk, your popularity will also rise in Europe, Would you like to go on a European tour and maybe even come to Italy? Do you think that one day it will be possible?
I would absolutely love to! This year was going to be the year I started playing shows, but obviously the state of the world has made it very difficult. Hopefully I can tour Europe in the next couple of years, when it’s safe to travel again.
